Kottayam district the land of Lakes, Latex & Letters is believed to be the seat of
Murinjanad Kings and later Thekkumkur Kings. The district is bounded by Ernakulam district
in the north, Idukki district in the east, Alappuzha district in the west and south and
Pathanamthitta district in the south. The district is known for the several rubber
plantations grown in the highland region close to the high ranges of Idukki district. The
midland region is highly fertile and rich in luxuriant vegetation. In certain parts of the
lowland region of the district, paddy fields are about a metre below the mean sea level.
Kottayam is one of the industrially developed districts of the state.

district, also has the distinction of being the highest literate district in the country.
The Kottayam town was the first town in India to achieve total literacy.
